A new chairman of the Primates’ Council of the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) has emerged. He is the Most Rev. Nicholas D. Okoh, Primate of the Anglican Church of All Nigeria. He takes over from the Most Revd. Eliud Wabukala, the Primate of the Church of Kenya.  He is joined in leadership by the new vice-chair, the Most Rev. Stanley Ntagali, Primate of the Anglican Church of Uganda. Archbishops Okoh and Ntagali have been deeply committed to the GAFCON movement since its founding, and are well prepared to lead.

We the Primates of the Global Anglican Future Conference met in Nairobi, Kenya from April 18-21, 2016. We give thanks for the gracious hospitality of the Anglican Church of Kenya, their Primate, the Most Rev. Eliud Wabukala, and All Saints Cathedral Diocese. As the location for GAFCON 2013, All Saints holds a special place in our history and in our hearts, and we have been encouraged to be here again. We began our meeting with prayer and a Bible study that focused on Mark 2:1-12. In this passage, the Scriptures retell the story of a man who could not walk, but was assisted by friends who helped bring him to Jesus. The Diocesan Bishop, Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Diocese of Egba, Ogun State, Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Adekunle, has described as shameful the attempt by the Senate to amend the Code of Conduct Tribunal Act. He said this in Abeokuta during a media briefing on the 2016 diocesan synod of the church which began on Friday with the theme, “The Beatitudes.” Bishop Adekunle said that events in the Senate in the past few weeks informed the need for Nigerians to be vigilant as it seemed that some of the lawmakers were in the legislature for their selfish interests and not to make life better for the people. He said, “It is sad that many of our lawmakers in the National Assembly, most especially the Senate, are there for selfish interests. “The recent happening in the Senate is shameful. I think Nigerians should be courageous enough to recall any of their representatives who is not representing them well — either in the Senate or in the House of Representatives.

The Diocesan Bishop of Lagos, Rev. Adebola Ademowo, says proliferation of churches with attendant spread of false doctrines has become a major source of concern to the Christian faith. As opposed to the virtues handed down by Christ, Ademowo lamented that homosexuality, ‘prosperity gospel,’ teenage pregnancies, high rate of divorce, ‘political correctness’ and corruption had become the order of the day among Christians. The Dean Emeritus of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, therefore, said there was a need for well-meaning individuals and people with high moral standards to rise up “and swim against these tides of unwholesomeness.”

The Federal Ministry of Education’s move to reduce the workload of primary and junior secondary pupils from 20 to a maximum of ten subjects under the nine-year basic educational curriculum was welcomed in most quarters as it would align our system with international paradigms. However, under this scheme which was developed by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Christian and Islamic Religious Studies, which are separately taught, will now be merged under a compulsory subject known as Religion and National Values (RNV). The House of Bishops of the Anglican Church of Tanzania has voted to rejoin the GAFCON movement and to authorize their primate to attend his week’s meeting of the GAFCON primates’ council in Nairobi. Meeting in Dodoma on 12-13 April 2016 the House of Bishops gave their blessing to the shift in policy initiated by Archbishop Jacob Chimeledya (pictured) that began at the January meeting of primates in Canterbury. In 2013 Bishop Chimeledya defeated Archbishop Valentino Mokiwa -- one of the founding GAFCON primates -- for election as archbishop and primate of Tanzania.

The Anglican Arch-Diocese of Enugu has officially banned wearing of topless dresses to Church weddings, reception and services. The Archbishop of the Arch-Diocese, Most Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Monday. Chukwuma said that the ban was to return moral chastity on persons, especially women, who attend such functions in the Church. He said that t Arch-Dioceses had directed priests and senior clergymen to henceforth inspect wedding gowns and approve them before the solemnisation of weddings. The cleric also said that using veils to cover topless wedding dresses would not be allowed again in Anglican Churches in Enugu.

Anglican Archbishop of Ecclesiastical Province of Lagos Mainland Diocese, Most Rev. Adebayo Dada Akinde on Monday commended the administration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, saying the prompt, positive and practical response of the government contributed largely to the success story of the safe rescue of the three female students of Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary, Ikorodu. Akinde who led other bishops of the Anglican Church, Principal of the school, Ven. Olaoluwa Adeyemi and parents of the three rescued female students on a “thank you” courtesy visit to the Governor at the Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja, said the success story of the rescue of the girls cannot be complete without the laudable efforts of the Lagos State Government. He said he and his team deemed it fit to come and appreciate the role played by the state government in the wake of the abduction of the students from the school on February 29 and particularly the role of Governor Ambode.

Three suspects involved in the abduction of three girls from a secondary school in Ikorodu, Lagos, were arrested during rescue operation, the Lagos State Police Command has said. Fatai Owoseni, the Commissioner of Police, told journalists on Sunday that the suspects include one Emmanuel (Arigidi) who was actively involved in the abduction, Seun Akanji, and one Henry who were conspirators. “With respect to the state of the girls, they are very well and they are stable,” said Mr. Owoseni. “I can confirm that immediate medical attention just to test them up has been given to them by the police medical team and I can as well tell you that as we picked them up, one of the questions we asked the girls was whether they were molested in any way and the three of them stated unequivocally that they were not molested in any way.” There were media reports during the week that there were negotiations ‎for a ransom between the kidnappers and the victims’ families, with the forme...

The three abducted schoolgirls of Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary in Ikorodu, Lagos, have been rescued by the police. It was gathered that the schoolgirls were rescued in an overnight operation by the police while some of the kidnappers were arrested. The Lagos State Police spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the rescue and arrests to our correspondent. “Yes, the girls have been rescued safely by the police in an overnight operation. We also made some arrests,” she said. The PPRO promised to get back to our correspondent with details of the operation. The pupils, while studying in a classroom on Monday evening, were seized by gunmen numbering 15 and escaped through the school fence‎. Details later…

The Anglican community in Lagos State and schools around Ikorodu have been thrown into confusion following the abduction of three female students by yet-to-be identified gunmen.  Preliminary investigations are linking the abduction of the students to suspected pipeline vandals, who have been having challenges with the joint task force on pipeline protection. The three students: Olisa Oluwatimilehin, Popo Olaniyan Tofunmi and Akinayo Deborah are all in Senior Secondary School (SSS) 2 and are between the ages of 14 and 15. The students were in their hostel at the Babinton Macaulay Junior Seminary School, at Agufoye Lugbusi area of Ikorodu, when the incident happened. The abduction of the students came barely less than two weeks after a similar incident was foiled at the Government Model School in Owutu area of Ikorodu  The police led by the commissioner of police in the state, Fatai Owoseni, on Tuesday combed the bush around the school in sear...

Three students of the Babington Macurley Junior Seminary (BMJS), Ikorodu, Lagos state, have been reportedly abducted by gunmen who struck from behind the school. The criminals who reportedly forced their way into the school premises located at Agunfoye-Lugbusi village, were said to have broke the perimeter fence which served as protection for the boarding students from the thick bush surrounding it and absconded with three girls at about 8pm on Monday.

Commissioning the project, the Bishop of Amichi, Rt. Rev. Ephraim Ikeakor said the church embarked on the banking project to encourage the culture of banking habit in the lives of the rural populace and discourage the attitude of living without saving for the rainy day.
